DHARAN, Feb 2: The hosts Dharan Football Club opened the 12th International Invitational Tuborg Budha Subba Gold Cup on a winning note. Laxmi Shrestha´s hat-trick helped the hosts thrash Morang Football Association 4-1 in the inaugural match on Tuesday.

Dharan FC took an early lead in the 2nd minute with Laxmi´s opener. He scored the goal in a pass set by Sudip Limbu. Laxmi doubled the lead in the 41st minute sending a corner kick into the net from the box.

Morang opened their account in the second half with Anil Dhimal´s goal while Dharan were leading 2-0. Morang played in attacking mode after Anil´s goal in the 58th minute but couldn´t finish. Both the teams missed half a dozen chances of scoring.

Laxmi added salt to injury with his third goal in the 83rd minute utilizing Buddha Chemjong´s pass. Shekhar Ghimire sealed the match in the dying minutes with the fourth goal for Dharan.

Morang´s coach Dipendra Dhimal attributed the defeat to poor coordination. “We lacked team work because we didn´t have enough practice,” he said.

Despite the victory, Dharan´s coach Deepak Limbu said that his players did not play up to his expectations. “Our midfield was weak, so we were under pressure. We won the match because of good finishing,” he said.

Laxmi Shrestha was adjudged the man-of-the-match.

The hosts will take on Armed Police Force - who received a bye - in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Wednesday´s match will be held between Knight Chess Club of Jhapa and Sunacho Club of Sikkim, India.
