26 Dec 2009 - LALITPUR: Nabil Three Star Club player Prabin Karki has been slapped with one year suspension from football following his attack upon the FIFA Assistant Referee Madhu Sudan Khanal on Friday’s British Gorkha Cup match against Boys Union Club.
“The All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) disciplinary committee meeting on Saturday, held under the convenorship of vice-president Bijaya Narayan Manandhar, concluded that the player had attacked Khanal and decided to impose the one-year ban,” informed the vice-president and spokesperson of the football governing body Lalit Krishna Shrestha.
The disciplinary committee includes vice-president Kumar Jung Thapa — also the match commissioner in Friday’s match —, Development Director Sanjeev Mishra, CEO Indra Man Tuladhar and General Secretary Dhirendra Pradhan. “In line with the reports of the match referee and commissioner, the disciplinary committee has suspended Karki from active football,” informed Shrestha, who is also the President of Three Star Club. The referee’s panel on Friday submitted a report to ANFA demanding a stern action against Karki.
Karki, who was on the preliminary 47-member squad for the 11th South Asian Games football, will be barred from participating in tournaments organised or recognised by ANFA until December 25 next year. After the match against Boys Union ended on a 1-1 stalemate, Karki had punched assistant referee Khanal alleging him of making wrong decision in the 19th minute. Three Star were one goal ahead at the time but Suvam Shrestha found the equaliser when the Three Star players left the ball for the player to score thinking it was out of the play.
In a similar situation four years earlier during the Martyrs Memorial A Division League, Brigade Boys Club’s Bishnu Sunuwar faced an 18-month ban after he punched referee Surendra Shikhrakar. It was a remarkable coincidence for Sunuwar as he watched Karki’s dismissal from the other end wearing the Boys Union jersey at the British Gorkha Cup.
