Unlucky TSC lose in Governors Gold Cup opener

17 Sept 2009 - Nabil Three Star Club (TSC), Lalitpur, failed to defend the Governors Gold Cup Football title on Thursday as they suffered a 5-4 sudden-death loss in their first match against George Telegraph in the Governors Gold Cup Football being held at Sikkim, India.

The match took the turn to tie breaker following the 1-1 and goalless stalemate in the regular and added time of the match respectively. Biraj Maharjan, Anjan KC and Surendara Tamang scored first three goals for TCS while Bikash Singh Chhetri and Nirajan KC missed spot kicks. TSC were bound to return home after Nirajan Khadka missed the last spot kick.

For the opponents George Telegraph, Mithun Shah, Jodilana, Sumer Dey, Pradip Roy and Deepak Singh scored goals in the tie-breaker. Telegraph took the lead in the ninth spot kick following which they converted all spot-kicks.

TSC which seemed to be unlucky took an early lead in the very second minute of the match through Yugal Kishor Rai. He sent the ball past net capitalizing a pass from Sandeep Rai taking the advantage of fallen opponent gloves-man. However, Telegraph canceled the lead in the second half of the match. Unmarked Angie Veroma stunned goalie Kiran Chemjong who seemed to be helpless for which the defending champions TSC seemed to pay a lot.
