Pokhara, February 2: Nepal Police Club moved a step closer to defend the Aaha Gold Cup title with a convincing 2-0 win over Nabil Three Star Club in the quarter-final here at the Pokhara Stadium today. Nepal Police Club will play against Belgharia Sporting Club of Kolkata for a place in final on February 4.
Dipen Shrestha put the Policemen ahead in the 14th minute capitalising on a blunder from Three Star goalkeeper Kiran Chemjong. Chemjong spilled an attempt from NPC midfielder Parbat Pandey and Chemjong pounced on to head home.
Spirited NPC pushed forward for yet another goal and their pressure paid off in the 34th minute. Jumanu doubled their lead following a pass from Bhola Silwal. After conceding two goals, the Lalitpur-based team looked more like saving their face rather than pushing for winning the game. Santosh Sahukhala and Sanjeev Budhathoki both missed chances in the first half for Three Star.
Three Star coach Bal Gopal Maharjan blamed ineffective strikers for their defeat. “We had several goal scoring opportunities but they could not convert anyone of them,” said Maharjan.
Maharjan’s counterpart Birat Shrestha said that his players have yet to find their rhythm. “Our players under-performed today,” said Shrestha adding that their opponents lost due to the consistent pressure exerted by his team. Chetan Ghimire of NPC was declared man of the match. Sahara UK will meet BN Sporting Club on Tuesday.
